WHAT TO EXPECT ON AN ISLAND HOPPERS
SAILING HOLIDAY
How long
will we be sailing each day?
In most cases 2-3 hours a day is the
maximum time spent moving between anchorages. Some days will be
spent at anchor or attached to the town quay without moving at
all.
Can we get
ashore when we want?
Because there are no tides in the
Mediterranean in up to 80% of anchorages you will be able to step
ashore for walks and meals. If at anchor the skipper can take you
ashore in the dinghy.
Will the
boat rock at night?
Because the coastlines in Greece,
Turkey and Croatia are heavily indented and protected it is very
unusual.
Can I go
swimming?
Yes in most anchorages swimming is a
large part of the holiday. A sturdy deck ladder is attached to the
stern of all vessels with a deck shower on the aft
steps.
Will we
have good weather?
We have chosen the best times of the
year when traditionally the weather is best. A really helpful
website that helps you understand the historical weather is
available at http://www.windguru.com/int/historie.php
What if I
get seasick?
As we are only sailing a few hours per
day and the boats are tied up at night, it is very unusual to
experience ongoing motion sickness. Most people that experience
motion sickness overcome this within days. You should consult your
doctor if you are concerned as there are new and improved
treatments and preventions available.
Will we
eat together as a group every
night?
Apart from the first and last night
get together you can choose who and where you want to dine ashore.
A lot of ports offer multiple waterfront restaurants. The yachts
have fridge/freezer ovens and stoves so you can also choose to cook
onboard.
Can we
sail the boat?
Yes! In fact the skipper is mainly
there only for your safety - we encourage you use him for free
sailing lessons! Being at the wheel of a large yacht is an
experience everyone should have.
What are
the ongoing costs?
It is normal to put into a boat kitty
for snacks/breakfast/lunch. Alcohol can be purchased ashore
separately and at least 10 nights of the 14 (and possibly 14
nights) will offer the option to eat ashore for lunch, dinner or
both.
Staying in marinas is an extra cost
but this may only be once every few nights. Croatia has the most
marinas. Cost can be $40 per person/per night depending on the
marina.
Apart from this there are no other
costs as fuel etc is included.
What if I
don’t gel with my fellow crew
members?
As we are running several boats in a larger
flotilla and have the flexibility to make some changes to try to
accommodate everyone’s needs and interests.
What is
expected of me onboard?
Nothing in terms of sailing the yacht,
you can be as involved as you like, leave it to the skipper or take
the helm or sail the yacht yourself.
How big
are the cabins?
Double bed size or single bunks on
some vessels. In the season it is usually light until 9.30pm and
people really only use the cabin for sleeping. Sitting at harbour
tavernas or in the cockpit watching the sun go down is much more
fun!
